- History: Petersen Gym was opened in May 1961 and is named after Charles E. Peterson, who had a 37-year career at SDSU serving as athletic director, football coach, track coach, basketball coach, Dean of Men, and alumni executive secretary. It has been home to several SDSU varsity sports teams over the years, including the men’s volleyball team, which won the school’s first NCAA Division I national championship in 1973.
